Tell me, old one,
did you rise with the sparrows,
their song still tucked in your chest like a secret?
Did you walk the fields, barefoot and knowing,
each blade of grass whispering its own green hymn?
Did you kneel by the river,
watching the silvered fish flash their brief light—
did you call it holy?
Did you listen, truly listen,
to the wind bending through the pines,
to the hush of snowfall settling like a prayer?
Did you learn, at last,
that the world is always speaking?
I hope you have kept the wonder.
I hope you have traced the veins of autumn leaves
and found your own reflection there,
a golden thing, rustling and alive.
I hope you have forgiven yourself
for the days you rushed,
for the moments you did not cup gently
in the palms of your hands.
And now, here you are—
skin like the soft bark of an old beech tree,
eyes still drinking the sky.
Are you tired, or are you free?
Tell me, old one,
if I listen now,
will I hear the river in my own pulse,
the wind already calling my name?
For now, I will walk slowly.
I will kneel. I will listen.
And when I find a feather in the dirt,
I will pick it up,
hold it to the light,
and remember that I, too, am something
that was always meant to rise.
